Most people are aware than LCD televisions are the small and thin television we do have in lots of places. Since 2007, such device have simply become the most sold in the whole market.
LED televisions are LCD televisions that will use LED Back lightning, rather than CCFL (as used in traditional LCD televisions). LED means ‘Light Emitting Diode’. LED televisions are thus thinner, will use less power, will dissipate less heat and will definitely have a brighter display with great contrast levels. LED televisions can also includes features like being Full 1080p HD, being able to display 3D and offering SmartTV.
There are two forms of back lightning used in LED televisions : local dimming, and edge lightning. The panel’s edge is incorporating the LEDs in the television design when we do talk about ‘edge lightning’, while local dimming refers to the fact that individual zones of LEDs can either be dimmed or brightened independently from each others. The current trend is going to edge lighting.
LED televisions are coming with great improvements. One of them is the 3D aspect, and also the SmartTV one. Samsung has its own Hypereal Engine to display 3D that needs a pair of active shutter glasses using infrared transmission. LG launched a 72 inches Full LED-back-lit 3D television. This television also has Smart TV and does uses TruMotion 400Hz technology for smoother 2D and 3D picture. The 3D technology by LG is using both passive and active technology. The first technology use polarized glasses to separate the images displayed, only letting the correct image intended for the left and right eye filter through the relevant lens. While the second use some special LCD shutter glasses that are activated by the emitter built inside the TV. Such glasses shutters open and close at different times to allow different images into each eye.
Another aspect we talked a bit before: Internet-ready. This technology is related as SmartTV. It will allow the user to search and find videos, movies, photos and other content on the web, on a local cable TV channel, on a satellite TV channel, or even stored on a local hard disk. Keep in mind that manufacturers will call such Internet-access under various names, and offering different possibilities. Example: Toshiba will call it ‘Enhanced Net TV’, Panasonic ‘Viera Cast’ and Sony ‘GoogleTV’.
LED TV are more energy savings and economical regarding the electrical power use. We are talking up to 40% less power are being consumed by LED televisions compared to LCD televisions. Year after year, manufacturers are coming with new models saving a bit more than before, and being a bit more greener for the environment.
